5. I've not read "Two Hundred Years Together," I DO think Solzhenitsyn is a brilliant writer--AN' I think he made mistakes, he only knew whut he knew... Yep they did! many had ta do it if they wanted to eat! Look at "Fiddler" -- the milkman (Tevye) had cows & goats & chickens (on the roof!) this was the NORM.
Mah fam back in Lithuania did three things: the boys were all rabbis or studyin' ta be BUT they all worked at the fambly lumber bizness (cuz bein' a rabbi wasn't enuf ta support 8 kids!--the bizness was all the adult "brothers") an' THREE--yep, farmin'--grew all their own stuff, raised chickens too.
So when mah great great gran & grampy & fambly came here to escape the Tzar's purges (they started in about 1904 but it took a few years ta all afford their journey)--they had literally nothin' so what did they do?
They used their farmin' knowledge an' became greengrocers (many steps down from the respect ye git as rabbis or ownin' a lumberyard!) but they leased (later owned) land outside the city and they knew veggies so they worked with farmers outside'a the city to grow on their rented land to their specifications. They worked hard an' all got their hands dirty! All the boys (4) went ta harvest, then packed veggies inta crates, hauled it all ta the "Eastern Market" an' then hawked their wares to a public that wanted farm-fresh foods. Two ended up at Harvard (that wuz prior ta quotas!) an' it soitenly wuz not due ta nepotism! When the patriarch (Josef) died the family let the kids support great great gran' in her mansion (!)--yup they did that well! An' when she passed away the bizness was sold. The other boys became lawyers (lol)--none became rabbis here... But that's our story an' agriculture figgers majorly in it!
We had in our fam a founding father of Israel (long story!) -- an' tho we lost touch with him durin' the war (we lost many in YourUp), mah fam wanted to see what he an' our fam that settled there--was up to. I was born well-long after their trips but I recall frequent talk about all the farmin' on the kibbutzes... the olives, oranges, vegetables an' the "greenery" in the desert!
